Mass spectrometry (MS)

Confirms the molecule's identity by measuring its mass.

Mass spectrometry measures the mass-to-charge ratio of molecules. For peptides, MS confirms identity by matching the measured molecular weight against the expected weight of the target sequence. A peptide that doesn't match its expected mass is either misidentified, degraded, or fake. MS is the standard for ID testing in the gray-market layer because it's harder to fake than HPLC purity.
