Selank

An approved Russian anxiety spray that aims for calm without the benzo fog, but it is untested outside Russia and risky to mix with antidepressants.

The quick version
What it is
A small calming peptide built from a piece of an immune protein
Is it FDA-approved?
No. Approved as a medicine in Russia only. RUO elsewhere
How strong is the proof?
Weak outside Russia. No English-language trials we can check
How you take it
Drops or spray in the nose, a few times a day for 1 to 2 weeks
Typical result
Some calm in small Russian studies. Not confirmed by Western trials
Biggest catch
Do not mix it with antidepressants. The interaction is untested

Any word with a dotted underline is a science word — tap it for a plain-English meaning.

In plain words.

Selank is a small calming . It is made of seven amino acids.

It is based on a natural piece of an immune protein called tuftsin. A Russian lab designed it to ease anxiety without the heavy, foggy feeling that some anti-anxiety drugs cause.

In Russia it has been an approved anxiety medicine since 2009. Outside Russia, it is not a medicine. It is sold "for research only."

So be honest with yourself about which lane you are in. A real Russian drug and a research chemical can both be true for the same .

What people use it for.

People use it for everyday anxiety. Think general nervousness or social anxiety.

Some people try it when they do not want to start an SSRI (a common antidepressant) yet, or when one did not work for them. Tech workers and streamers like that it is subtle and short-acting.

It is not for severe panic disorder or OCD. Those need a real treatment plan with a doctor.

Does it actually work?

Maybe, for ordinary anxiety, but the whole case rests on Russia's own studies.

There are zero English-language randomized trials. There are about 10 Russian-language clinical reports, mostly on general anxiety. The trouble is, it is hard to check how well those studies were run from outside. There are also about 40 animal studies.

So the honest read is: Russia approved it on its own evidence, but the wider world has not confirmed it. If you try it, treat it as an experiment, not a proven cure.

what you’ve probably heard.

The claims floating around online, and how true they actually are.

Selank kills anxiety without the fog of a benzo.

unproven

That is the pitch, and small Russian studies hint at some calm. But there are zero English-language trials we can check, so outside Russia you are the experiment.

It's a safe, natural alternative to an SSRI.

not quite

It seems to touch the brain's serotonin system itself, so it is not a side-step around that machinery. Calling it natural and clean skips the one real hazard here.

You can run it alongside your antidepressant.

no

Do not. Stacking it with an SSRI, SNRI, MAOI, tramadol, or a triptan could raise the risk of serotonin syndrome, and that combo was never tested.

Inject it for a stronger, faster hit.

unproven

All of the data, even Russia's, is for the nose route. Inject it and you have left every bit of evidence behind.

How you take it.

You take it in the nose, as drops or a spray. That is the route the Russian studies used.

The Russian label points to 1 to 3 doses a day for about 7 to 14 days. Exact amounts vary by how strong the product is.

Do not inject it. The data is for the nose route, not for shots. If you run it, set a short window (a couple of weeks) and rate your anxiety at the start and weekly so you can tell if it did anything.

What to watch out for.

The serious stuff

The biggest warning is about mixing. Selank seems to touch the brain's serotonin system. Do not it with antidepressants or similar drugs (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs), or with tramadol or triptans. Mixing could raise the risk of a dangerous reaction called serotonin syndrome. The Russian studies never tested this combo, so it is uncharted. Do not add it without your own prescriber.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, skip it. There is no human safety data.

Be careful with benzodiazepines too. Selank may add to their calming effect, so you could get more drowsy.

The common stuff

The Russian reports did not flag major side effects. But "none reported in one country's papers" is not the same as a clean, proven safety record.

Talk to a real doctor, especially if you take any mental-health medicine. We are not your doctor.

Where people get it.

Here are the lanes from safest to riskiest.

  • Brand (Russia). A real approved nose product, about $30 to $50 a month at Russian retail. But bringing it into the US is legally restricted.
  • . A few US pharmacies make a nose version, about $80 to $200 a month. This is the closest US-legal match to the Russian product.
  • Research-only (). The main lane outside Russia, about $25 to $70 a month. Sold "for research only." You usually have to mix your own nose spray.
  • . Overseas raw powder, about $7 to $9 a month. Unregulated import.

Our honest take.

A real anxiety medicine in Russia, a mystery powder everywhere else
It has been on Russian pharmacy shelves since 2009, and the pitch is appealing: calm without the fog of a benzo. But no English-language trial has ever checked it, so outside Russia you are the trial.

The one hard line is mixing. If you are on any antidepressant or serotonin-type drug, leave it alone, because it touches the same serotonin system and nobody has tested that combo. For someone with ordinary situational nerves and none of those meds, a one-to-two week nose-spray test, rated honestly at the start and the end, is about the size of bet that makes sense. Inject it and you have left even the Russian evidence behind, since every bit of it is for the nose.
